The most common reasons for yellowing or staining are tea, coffee, tobacco and aging. Tooth whitening is very effective on these types of stains. Some stains are due to intrinsic factors, for example, tetracycline antibiotics taken while teeth are developing and exposure
to too much fluoride as a child. These stains tend to be deeper and may not be able to be
corrected through whitening. Also stains can be internal from a traumatic incident. These teeth
can be whitened internally in combination with root canal therapy.
